Many people are unfamiliar with this term until they are in the middle of an important process such as applying for dual citizenship, getting married abroad, handling international business, or submitting legal paperwork overseas. Understanding what an apostille is and when you need one can save you time, stress, and costly delays.  What Is an Apostille?   An apostille is a certificate issued by the Secretary of State that authenticates the signature and seal on a public document.
